Obtaining a federal tax number

You will need a federal tax id number if you are incorporating or plan to have employees. Otherwise your social security number will be used. Obtain a federal employer identification number from the Internal Revenue Service Office nearest you. Ask for a Business Tax Kit, if you need to, I found it very helpful when starting my business. You can get this packet from the internet at: www.irs.ustreas.gov or call 1-800-829-3676 and ask for the business tax kit. The fax number is (703)368-9694,

The packet they send you has a lot of information about starting a business, keeping records, filing your taxes, and paying them. They also have a guide to free tax services. Contact the Internal Revenue Service, Taxpayer Education Service to determine potential tax obligations and filing requirements. This is also available on the internet at the same site.

Like all government organizations - the information is there, sometimes it takes a little looking to find it all.

Do you need a taxid?
